Momentary Lapse is a video and research project examining the relationship between (1)memory, (2)recorded media, and (3)knowledge. Through personal archives and video studies, the project asks how technological recordings participate in the construction and recollection of experience.

The research draws on Bernard Stiegler’s tertiary retention and Maurice Halbwachs’s theory of collective memory to consider (1)memory as something that is not contained solely within the individual, but is also shaped by external media, social frameworks, and material forms.

By examining repetition, editing, degradation, and reinterpretation, Momentary Lapse investigates the unstable relationship between lived experience, biological memory, and recorded memory, and asks to what extent video can function as evidence of what we believe we know about the past.
