Study 091926
Stiegler proposes the inheritance of memory in technics (technological artifacts) that include images and video but also objects from the duration of human civilization.
Our memories guide us in our inward experiences and when objects are embedded with meaning, the tools we use to remember also becomes significant. For example, listening to vinyl versus cd versus digital-streaming is not only different in terms of quality of sound, but also how physical or non-physical our attachment to the particular song becomes, as it relates to memory. In relation to the physical product of the circular cd, or the specificity and size of a vinyl album, the artwork associated with the album or the place you had bought the physical album.
A clearer example could be a dining chair within the dining room. Your interaction with the dining area, and the associated memories have more to do with the materiality of the chair and the design of it, rather than the concept that you were able to sit down or not. The memory of the dining room exists through its attachment value to the products within it.
It’s neither a negative or a positive proposition but a proposition to be considered regardless, when dealing with any medium.
*Stiegler considered this proposition pharmakon- or poison and cure, a term borrowed from Derrida.
