Surround Sound: 4 Channel-video 2026, running time 7:04
“Surround Sound” (2026) examines the way geography organizes our everyday life and personal history. The video is comprised of four channels that combine home videos, close-up footage, navigational maps, underlaid with directions, in the manner of end-credits. The artist narrates the directions between each home the artist and his family has lived in after arriving in Pennsylvania in the late 80s.
The two archival videos; a tour of a new house in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania is juxtaposed against a video of the artist’s father’s return to South Korea for jesa, during that same year. The two videos gradually exchange positions, revealing and hiding one another.
The narration replaces story with instructions. An encyclopedic guide map of the life lived. Two records exist within Surround Sound. The archival and the instructional. By allowing these records to exist side by side, the video considers how geography provides conditions for our behavior and memory to take shape.
